CANYON COUNTY PET HAVEN, INC.

Canyon County Pet Haven, Inc. (a.k.a. Pet Haven) was formed in 1972 by
Helen Wilson, a teacher at Northwest Nazarene College.  In the beginning
our animals were boarded at veterinary clinics.  In 1996 we were able to
purchase our own building.

Approximately 2500 animals pass through our facility each year.  We primarily
handle cats, as our shelter is not large enough to sustain indoor dog runs.
We do get a few small dogs that can fit in our cat-size kennels and we have
a foster program for medium and larger dogs.  Cats in our shelter are spayed
and neutered, vaccinated, wormed, checked for ear mites and tested for
feline leukemia before they are adopted.

We also have 2 programs for senior citizens.  Recognizing that sometimes
an animal is the best (and maybe only) friend that an elderly person has, we
have established a fund to help pay for these animals in the event that they
become ill or are injured and the senior citizen is living on very limited funds.

Since some of the retirement homes are now allowing people moving in to
bring their animals but are requiring a pet deposit, we have set aside a fund
to pay the deposit for seniors who are otherwise unable to come up with that
additional amount of money.  When the senior leaves the facility, or the deposit
is no longer required, the money is returned to us to help another senior.

There are a lot of people who have expressed the desire to adopt animals
but do not want to come to a shelter because it depresses them to see all the
cats in kennels.  We now have off site adoptions on weekends at Petco in
Nampa.

We believe that the only way we can stop the overpopulation of domestic
animals is to educate the children and with that goal in mind have been trying
to find more volunteers to go into the schools to reach the children.  We have
had success with this program but need to cover more schools than we have
been able to reach in the past.

We receive no government funds so we operate totally from adoption fees,
donations and from the sales of goods at our thrift store.  We are always in
need of volunteers to man booths at fairs, shows, etc., and to go to schools.
